Hello and welcome to Pivoting Pharmacy with Nutrigenomics. I'm Dr. Lawful, doctor of pharmacy and certified nutritional genomics specialist. You know, as entrepreneurs, we all struggle with staying fit and healthy while building our businesses. You may find yourself neglecting your health and wellness as you work long hours growing your business, or maybe even struggling to find the time and motivation to exercise and eat right. Well, I want to help you get on track. So today we're speaking with high-performance coach Roman Fisher, who has helped people transform their physical and mental health. Roman's ultimate goal is to help transform other people's lives, from their mind to their bodies, no matter their fitness goals. Whether you want to gain muscle and strength, burn fat, do a body recomposition or simply just gain more flexibility and mobility, roman helps you become an even better you. So let's discover how to shift your mindset for your physical and mental well-being. So, roman, you know what. Let's get right into it. Our listeners are here. They're contemplating the leap from being an employee to an entrepreneur. I'm excited to get your input from that, as an entrepreneur yourself in the health and fitness realm. But before we get into that, tell us about you. Who is Roman?

Roman:

Yes, so I, roman Fisher. I am actually other than a high-performance coach, helping clients transform their minds and their bodies and doing some bodybuilding. I also act and model. I do some film acting voiceovers from time to time and I even do some fitness modeling, which is perfect because it kind of segues back right into fitness itself. So that's a lot of what I do, and occasionally I'll even compete in some bodybuilding or physique competitions. So that's usually what keeps me pretty busy from month to month and week to week.

Dr. Tamar:

Oh, that's, yeah. That sounds like you would be pretty busy. Fun fact, I was competing for a physique competition six years ago. I was preparing for it. Oh well, then I got pregnant.

Roman:

Oh yeah, I had to eat differently.

Dr. Tamar:

I had to change everything and, honestly, after having a baby, for me it's been more difficult to even get back into the mindset of the discipline that's needed to really train to that extent. So, as a high-performance coach, I'm sure that you've come across clients that it's a lot of psychological things. There's this psychological paradigm shift that needs to happen and that's what I'm really interested in talking with you about today, because many health professionals or those who are in a health fitness realm who go into entrepreneurship how you've been doing this for 10 years they struggle with this internal transition, this mindset shift from being an employee to be in their own boss. And you've been your own boss for what?

Roman:

Yeah, a few years Right.

Dr. Tamar:

And so, from your experience working with over 50 individuals, how major of a factor is this psychological paradigm shift in their journey towards entrepreneurship or towards making those physical changes in their body?

Roman:

Yes, it is a huge, huge shift, to say the least. It can definitely, if not done right and if not done properly, it can take a huge toll on your emotional and really mental health. If you're not careful and if you don't play your cards right, it can definitely put a damper on that. So you got to make sure when making the transition it's totally fine to do so, but you got to do it steadily and gradually and you got to make sure that whenever you're starting any business whether it's in health and fitness or any other industry for that matter you have to make sure that you're making just enough money to cover, obviously, your expenses for month to month, but also that you're having a little money lucked over for other things too, to save. Yeah, so that's one of those things you got to be aware of and very certain of before you make that full transition and be like I'm going to quit my nine to five now. So you got to make sure that, first and foremost, always so you have that financial security and stability. Beyond that, though, I would say another thing is to not ever and it sounds kind of rough for some people but don't ever get too comfortable. Yes, you do want comfort in life I mean, we all, I guess, due to an extent but don't ever get too comfortable, because if you feel like you got everything under control, the next moment life's going to throw you a curveball, especially when you're trying to be your own boss, because you have to really deal with a lot of, sometimes unpredictable income. So you just got to make sure that you know how to segue around that and how to deal with that, especially when that moment possibly hits.

Dr. Tamar:

Yeah, I definitely resonate with that, and it's so true. You can't get comfortable because you're not the only one doing this right. There's so many other fitness coaches. There's so many other like I do health coaching. There's so many other health coaching. And a pharmacist there's so many other pharmacists with similar interests that I have. You have to think ahead, like what's the next unique thing that you can do to make your services, the services you offer, stand out from the other, or else we're going to be a next Blackberry.

Roman:

Yeah, exactly, you got to stay where are they? You got to stay relevant.

Dr. Tamar:

You got to stay up to date iPhone came in and Blackberry is no longer relevant because they weren't thinking ahead. So I definitely resonate with that 100%. That is a great tip for entrepreneurs. So what are the most common hurdles? That mental hurdles, that you've seen, the people you work with face.

Roman:

Yeah, when it comes to the just overall fitness aspect of things, with the clients I've had and the clients I have, it's typically one of a few things. One of the biggest things is when they're starting their fitness journey, trying to get into that routine that they want to establish and have set for themselves within their fitness journey. See, getting that routine and I know personally for myself when I started fitness for the first time it took a lot of willpower and a lot of effort to get into that routine. And even with motivation you got to have that consistency to back it up. Otherwise that motivation could easily just burn out. So you got to make sure that you have that motivation and that consistency though to back up that motivation. So that's a lot of what my clients have struggled with. Starting out is trying to get that motivation but then that consistency to keep going. But over time they fall right into it and they start getting into that routine and it becomes a lot easier for them physically, mentally and emotionally.

Dr. Tamar:

You know I agree with you. Me personally, motivation is a challenge. Some people say, oh well, you motivate by, like competing with somebody. I'm not a competitive person, I don't care, you've been great for you, good for you, I'm going to celebrate you, right. So how? Where do they draw that motivation from?

Roman:

I'd say this, really knowing, first and foremost, that you're only in competition with yourself and no one else around you. That's where a lot of people get mistaken. A lot of people really get the wrong idea and the wrong mindset that they have to always compete against the next person around them to do better and be better than they were yesterday. But really all it comes down to you is focusing on yourself and how you can be better than your past self or even your yesterday itself, and just taking that one simple day at a time and by doing that, that takes the stress off of trying to be better from the other person and it just makes it where you can focus on yourself, because by the end of the day, that's who you're with every day anyway. So you got to make sure that you're always advancing yourself, even if it's by a small margin, each and every day throughout the week. So knowing that first and foremost, but then also envisioning your success and what it could look like and really describing it and even writing it down in a journal, if you have one, or at the very least typing it in your phone and like a notepad on that app, so that can actually help bring you that motivation. And also what I found to you is focusing and fixating on the things that you're grateful for, anything small, anything big, anything in between that you're happy and thankful and grateful for. That also will help get that motivation a lot stronger for yourself in your everyday life. And the only other thing I could probably think of that's really great for motivation is to practice I can statements. So, yes, a lot of people can think that they're limited, but really we're as limited as we want to be. The only ceilings above us are the ones that we create for ourselves. So just practicing more I can statements, that will definitely just transform the trajectory of your mindset and, ultimately, your path in your life.

Dr. Tamar:

Awesome Roman, you are preaching right now Amen, Amen. I love that and it's like, yeah, it's all it has to do with us, like I think that you're right Now. All the tips you've mentioned are indicating that the best form of motivation are from ourselves, not from other people. We can't do something because other people want us to, we have to be able to do it, and it comes from within. So, being our own competition, competing against ourselves. I love those points that you brought out. I'm definitely helpful, and this is why I was really excited to talk to you, because I know that a lot of what is involved in fitness can transfer into business as well. The same mindsets, the same tips that you just listed are necessary for entrepreneurship and business as well. Not competing against anybody else, you're your own competition, being grateful for acknowledging your wins as well.

Roman:

So that's something I do a lot with the clients I have, and the clients I get is always on a coaching call. Just go over their three wins for the past week. Anything fitness related or even personal or business slash, career related to you.

Dr. Tamar:

Now I know that my clients, my health coaching clients it's very difficult for them to identify their wins. Do you see that? Do you get the same Once in a?

Roman:

while, yeah, some of them will just be like boom, boom, boom. I'm like sweet, yeah. And then sometimes they're like okay, so I can't really think of many. I can think of one, maybe two, and then like the third one sometimes are just like frozen for a minute, I'm like, and then I'll be like suggesting something. I'll be like I'm like, oh yeah, that is a win. I'm like, yeah, there we go, no matter how small, yeah.

Dr. Tamar:

No matter how small, it's a win. It's a step further than they were yesterday or last week or last year. It's a win. Oh yeah, so in your biography, you mentioned that your focus is to improve people's lives from their mind to their bodies. How do you see the interaction between physical and mental health in reference to entrepreneurship Like, for example, your journey? How do they intersect the interaction between physical and mental health?

Roman:

I'd say for starters this is actually one of my mentors that always said this how you do one thing is how you do everything. So if your mindset and your physical state is not in check, that likely will not translate well into business, whatever business you have, whatever business you own and whatever industry you're in. So you got to make sure that all of them go together, all of them are healthy, all of them are positive, in a good headspace in your mind, but also that your body is in check and in shape, right, the very least overall healthy, even if you don't have like a six pack, as long as you have, you know, an overall pretty decent build to you and your fit, or at least reasonably fit, and your mind is clear, it's focused, it's laser focused, even even better and you're not just all over the place in your mind and distracted. That will make it a lot easier to transition into any business you have, in, any business that you might want to start, if you have not started that said business yet. And then the three really just go together and they blend and mesh pretty well from there. But you got to make sure each and every aspect and facet of those three things is in check for him all to work.

Dr. Tamar:

Wow, and what was that phrase again?

Roman:

Yeah, my mentor actually told me this and he says this quite a bit. But how you do one thing is how you do everything.

Dr. Tamar:

How you do one thing is how you do everything Wow.

Roman:

Yeah, Cause we're creatures of habit. You know any one thing we do after so many times, we'll just repeat it, Sometimes not even knowingly repeat it. It'll be more of a subconscious thing sometimes. So we got to make sure that we're making and creating healthy habits anywhere and everywhere we can.

Dr. Tamar:

And, once again, the fitness realm. Those tips transfer over into entrepreneurship. We have to do the same thing. We need to be flexible. There are times that we're going to have to pivot what our original vision was or strategy was, to make some changes and then you have progress. It's amazing how what's going on in the physical world for fitness also can be applied to what we're doing in entrepreneurship.

Roman:

Oh yeah, time management too. Yeah, like you got to make sure that you know sometimes if you have a business, you got to make sure that you're not taking two hour workouts and obviously you don't have to do that anyway to get good, solid results in the gym. But knowing how to manage your time in the gym can also really well translate into how to manage your personal life and even your career or business life, and they all really work together in that aspect as well.

Dr. Tamar:

Yeah, definitely coincides Definitely. So now going into like flexibility and mobility, you mentioned the importance of physical flexibility and mobility in your mission. Often these qualities are underestimated.

Roman:

Oh yeah.

Dr. Tamar:

Actually, we'll touch a little bit about the flexibility in the realm of business and entrepreneurship, but can you talk about how they parallel between physical flexibility and their importance? As someone who's a boss, who's in charge?

Roman:

Yeah, so obviously physical flexibility is important for your health to help just move better and be more active and do workouts a lot, you know easier, more productively, but also help reduce injuries and limit injuries. And also that can again translate well if you're a boss of a business or you're the owner of that business, like fully the owner or CEO of that business, it helps to have that physical flexibility Because then you feel less tense, you feel less stressed for any meetings that you might have, let's say with a team of people in your company, or even if you're like a solo entrepreneur, just having that flexibility physically that'll make you a lot less tense also and a lot less stressed and just more mobile to get more done throughout your day, no matter your business and industry that you're working in.

Dr. Tamar:

Yeah, that's good Because there's definitely stress that comes along with owning a business and it's interesting that that flexibility, that physical flexibility, can help with that because you're that's part of your fitness routine right and it's helping you become more flexible and the fitness routine process also helps you deal with stress.

Roman:

Oh yeah.

Dr. Tamar:

So it's important you entrepreneurs out there to make sure you're fitting in, you're a fitness routine and you're day to day. Don't neglect it at all. So, roman, you indicate that your goal is to create a better you and everyone you help. So how do you balance this ambition with the reality that change is uncomfortable often and even intimidating? So how do you create a better you and your clients when change is difficult for most?

Roman:

So how I create better versions of my clients is to have them understand that well, first and foremost, that it's a process, it's progress over perfection. And I love to tell every client this, even the newest of the new clients. I always love to tell them that nothing's overnight, nothing is going to just happen the next day or the next morning. Things take time. It's just like with building a house. You know it comes in phases. You have to have that foundation before anything else and before you even finish that house ultimately. So knowing that it's just a journey and eventually it's a lifestyle, so having them know that first and not get overwhelmed, thinking they have to achieve X goal and X amount of time and it's usually people thinking they can lose a lot of weight and only like two, maybe three months and sure you can drop some pounds pretty quickly, not all of its fat weight, but some of it's a lot of, it's probably water weight initially. But yeah, those kind of unrealistic expectations, I try to have them just, you know, dish out the windows so they're not setting themselves up for disappointment mentally, because their mental aspect that's what's going to really help drive the emotional and the physical aspect ultimately. And so once that's all finalized and dialed in properly, then I try to make a very consistent but not overwhelming schedule for them. I try to have them work out two to three days a week, typically three days starting out, and do some full body workouts, maybe some light cardio at the end and some light stretching, just to really help with the ease of any tension that they may have had in their workouts and with their muscles, to really help limit the soreness and tension from the workout. And then, yeah, from there I just make sure they're eating healthy, whole foods. I don't really advocate I mean, of course, if they like fad diets, that's fine but I typically just go with a balanced diet that has just a lot of protein and some whole grains and vegetables. And from there I just make sure that they're staying the course and having their mindset just as positive and upbeat and focused as possible.

Dr. Tamar:

I like how you said just start slow. I take a little bit at a time, right? It's something we say in the pharmacy world when we're talking about adjusting medications or starting medication start low, go slow, so you start at a low dose and you slowly build on. If needed, I'm trying to do the reverse and try and take them off of it, right.

Roman:

That's good.

Dr. Tamar:

By focusing on their physical activity and their nutrition and stress management, but absolutely love it. It's true, and anything we do, we have to start low, slow, but, of course, we have high expectations. Right, we have this vision of when it comes to entrepreneurship, achieving these huge goals, get a lot of clients, make a lot of money. When it comes to fitness, I'm going to drop 30 pounds next week, but we have to be realistic.

Roman:

Right.

Dr. Tamar:

Right, we have to be realistic and as one coach for another, that's what we help our clients to ground them, bring them down to earth. Now you mentioned the fat diets, right? So what do you tell a client that wants to start a fat diet?

Roman:

So I typically tell them hey, if that's your preference, we can definitely go with that, because whatever your dietary preferences are, we can definitely base your meal plan off of that. That's totally fine, as long as you stick to it and follow the calories. And I do stress to them, while you could do a fat diet, the calorie intake is really what matters by the end of the day. But I also tell them that if you don't want to do the fat diets, we don't have to do that either. I mean, fat diets aren't necessary, but if you want to do them, we definitely can, you know, make that happen, we can arrange that. But as long as you're staying in the calorie window you have to be in, based off of your activity level, your age, weight, height, all those things, and that helps really better ensure and solidify that they can get results still. But yeah, I typically don't advocate fat diets unless the client really wants them.

Dr. Tamar:

And why is that? Do you think they're sustainable?

Roman:

Not typically. No, I do try to stress to them that to you, that diets like the keto diet, for example, you can get results if you have your calorie window adjusted accordingly to your activity level, but it's not required and it certainly is not usually a long term thing that you can stick to, because a lot of people anyway like carbs and it's not always easy to just not have carbs, especially if you're going out with friends, family, and that can it can be tough on your system. To you, so it's definitely not the most sustainable diet out there, but people can do it if they want, but I don't really usually recommend it.

Dr. Tamar:

Yeah, and that's a good point you brought out on two things that with the keto diet, you definitely need to be disciplined If you, if you diver, of course you're going to gain weight. And second, that it's not for everybody, and I'm a certified ketogenic nutrition specialist as well, and that's what really led me into nutri genomics, where, based on a client's DNA, I'm able to tell what type of nutrition would be best for them. And not everybody is cut out to handle a high fat nutrition plan. So not everyone should be on a ketogenic diet and that's why it works for some people and it doesn't work for others, because not everyone is cut out to do it and, yes, indeed, discipline is needed. You pretty much just have make your own, cook your own food. There's no takeout, there's no pre packaged foods. I know they have a lot of keto friendly foods out there, but it's just best to make your own food when you're on a keto diet and so, yeah, it's difficult to really maintain it because it's so strict. It's so strict.

Roman:

Oh yeah.

Dr. Tamar:

I definitely wanted to get your viewpoint on that, on the fad diets and how you go about instructing your clients about pursuing those type of diets. So you mentioned high performance coaching. Can you tell me more about that, how you work with your clients for high performance coaching?

Roman:

Yeah. So outside of just general fitness, with gaining muscle, gaining strength, flexibility or even burning fat, I also help them with their mindset and their mentality, because that's again what drives really much of everything your fitness, career, business if you have one and just your overall everyday personal life. So you got to make sure your mindset is in check and it's in tip top shape. Because you got to have a positive mindset. Now things happen. People will get swayed and they're thinking I mean, it happens to me, it happens to everyone to an extent, but it's how long you allow it to affect you mentally. And then you just got to make sure to bounce back or rebound and not let that just affect you and really eat you alive from the inside out. So that's what I try to help my clients with is I haven't realized that any problems, no matter how big or small they might be that happen to you in your life or anyone else that might be around them, they're temporary, they're phases, just like with working out. They come in phases. They come but then they leave. You know, nothing's ever permanent and nothing is ever going to be there forever, including the bad things. So having them realize that that really helps in the coaching, not just with the physical but the mindset coaching that I do provide as like a two in one. It really helps their thinking just be realigned to a lot more positive light and that way they're able to perform better. And I noticed that from when they start with me to where they eventually go in the next like few weeks to you know, especially months later I can tell their full energy, their personality, just everything, their sleep, everything just improves dramatically.

Dr. Tamar:

That is amazing and it's so true. The mind is powerful, yes, and it affects so much of how we perceive the world around us, how we take on each day, how we wake up in the morning. Just having definitely having that positive mindset makes a huge difference, a huge difference, and so kudos to you for working with your clients on their mindset to make sure that they have that positive outlook and they're ready to take on those workouts. And it translates into across is over, into everything else they do outside of the outside of the gym.

Roman:

Oh yeah, definitely, and just having the clients that I have to really write down and even sometimes say out loud what they're grateful for and anything and everything they've accomplished also helps their mindset tremendously.

Dr. Tamar:

Gratitude, indeed, is necessary. I love it. Before we wrap up, could you share one key piece of advice for our healthcare professionals who are listening? And they, they're going to start this entrepreneurial journey. They're going to be busy and they're probably going to start neglecting their fitness. What? Is that one piece of advice that you can give them Make sure that they're still taking care of their health.

Roman:

So I would say to understand that you have to make yourself priority number one, not in a selfish way, but so you can show it better for yourself and other people around you. And so in doing so and to do that, it's really creating, even if it is just 15 minute workouts, like circuits that you can do in the morning before you deal with anyone else. I recommend waking up earlier, if that's what it takes, and doing 15 minute workouts at least three times a week and they can be full body circuits, 15 minutes each three times a week in the morning. That way you're getting your body and your mind grounded before anything else later in the day and you're at least giving time to yourself for physical activity for your fitness, your health, before anyone else that you might deal with. And you're at least getting that in three days a week. That way you can show it better for yourself and other people around you and still help other people and help yourself in the process.

Dr. Tamar:

Yes, indeed, I absolutely love it. Now, from one previous fitness fanatics to another, I know what full body circuits are, but for our listeners they may not know. So could you give an example of what that would be?

Roman:

Yeah, definitely so, basically working out your whole body, so up or lower, everything in between and doing. You know you could do things like pushups, you could do jumping jacks, you could do some lunges, body weight squats and you could use dumbbells if you want. But if you're a beginner, I typically recommend just calisthenic or body weight workout, so no weights required even, and that can actually make it easier for some people that don't have access to the gym or access to weights, so you can literally just wake up in your home and have no weights at all around you and just get down, do some pushups, do some setups, jumping jacks, planks for your abs and a bunch of other workouts with that wall sits or body weight squats, body weight lunges, and that way you're getting your chest, your triceps, your lower body worked, and then you could even do some decline pushups and that way you can also work your shoulders a little bit in the process.

Dr. Tamar:

Oh, not the decline pike pushups, oh my gosh, I hate it.

Roman:

Those, yeah, those, those aren't for everyone, but they're so effective.

Dr. Tamar:

Yeah, love it. Thank you for sharing those examples with us, roman, and I love that those examples you gave can be done in your home. You don't have to get up in the cold in the morning and defrost your window and go to the gym. You can do it right there in your home. There are very simple exercises and making it a smaller increments of 15 minutes. You know, turn on your favorite music and just get down for 15 minutes doing those pushups, those squats, those lunges, to make it enjoyable.

Roman:

Oh yeah, that way you're saving time and you're getting a lot of calories burned, especially in a really short amount of time, and that way, especially if you're trying to lose weight, that's a great way to drop some pounds and also stay fit, stay active and not spend all day working out.

Dr. Tamar:

Yes, well, roman, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your tips with our listeners and professionals and entrepreneurs who definitely want to get their fitness and health journey started, because they're busy helping their clients and their patients do that, and sometimes we tend to neglect ourselves right.
